Bizz Johnson Trail

A Rail Trail Grows with ALC’s Help

Once a busy rail corridor used to transport logs to mills in northeastern California, the Bizz Johnson Trail is now a highlight of the National Rails-to-Trails system. Now more than 13,000 miles of abandoned railway lines to recreational trails across the country.

The trail begins on the east side of the Sierra and Cascade Ranges in Susanville. For much of its route, the Bizz Johnson Trail follows the Susan River, crossing it 12 times on bridges and trestles. The trail passes through a rugged, undeveloped canyon that looks much as it did when the rail line was constructed more than 80 years ago.

ALC worked with the Bureau of Land Management to complete public ownership of the 272 acres along the 30-mile rail-trail. Popular with bikers, hikers, runners, horseback riders and cross-country skiers, the Bizz Johnson Trail preserves a special place where people can play for generations to come.
