Sulphur Creek
Restoring an Imperiled Watershed
The Sulphur Creek valley is part of a 6,500-acre watershed located in the coastal range of northern California. Once heavily mined for gold, Sulphur Creek feeds natural hot springs that are part of the historic Wilbur Hot Springs resort. ALC sold the property to the resort, subject to a conservation easement that precludes development of the land and protects the oak woodlands, grasslands and riparian habitat.
From 2002 to 2005, ALC oversaw a three-year restoration effort on the property funded by the California Wildlife Conservation Board. Many workers and dedicated volunteers removed invasive tamarisk and yellow starthistle, and replanted native species along the Sulphur Creek corridor.
