Fiscalini Ranch
Helping a Community Protect Open Space
Ranches, farms and open space are at risk as pressure from second home development mounts along the Central Coast. The Fiscalini Ranch in Cambria became a flashpoint when the owners unveiled plans for a 600-unit development. At a standoff, the developers and community members approached ALC for help. With support from local residents, businesses and state and local officials, ALC was able to craft a conservation solution and eventually assembled $11.1 million needed to buy the property.
The ranch’s pine and oak woodlands, springs, seasonal wetlands and riparian areas are home to rare wildlife including red-legged frogs, steelhead trout, monarch butterflies, great blue herons and Cooper’s hawks. Now owned by the Cambria Community Services District and protected by a conservation easement, the property offers hiking trails including a mile of the California Coastal Trail.
