Maine Woods
Helping Restore the North Woods
ALC joined local efforts to protect the 5,769-acre Seven Ponds Preserve in the central mountain region of Maine. With much of Maine’s forested land up for sale, conservationists see an opportunity to restore the original forest ecosystem. They envision a three-million-acre Maine Woods National Park that would enable wolves, caribou, salmon and trout to thrive again in the North Woods.
In 2002, ALC partnered with RESTORE: The North Woods; the Sweetwater Trust and RESTORE board member Roxanne Quimby, founder of Burt's Bees, to purchase the forested Seven Ponds property.
The property is now owned by Elliotsville Plantation, Inc., a non-profit conservation foundation that holds and manages over 70,000 acres of wild lands in northern and coastal Maine. It is managed as part of the 8,700-acre Big Wilson - Seven Ponds Sanctuary which encompasses a 3-mile stretch of the original route of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail.
Donate NowWith your help, American Land Conservancy can continue to conserve the very best of our ecological, scenic, recreational, cultural and agricultural resources.
