Success Stories
This section showcases some of ALC’s conservation success stories. We hope they inspire you to join us!

Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation
ALC is proud to partner with the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation in conserving the extraordinary wildlife habitat of Alaska. The Elk Foundation is an international, nonprofit wildlife habitat conservation organization that works to ensure the future of elk, other wildlife and their habitat. ALC and The Elk Foundation recently celebrated a tremendous success with the conservation of 4,400 acres on Afognak Island, located in the Kodiak Archipelago some 225 miles southwest of Anchorage.
Afognak Island is a refuge for Roosevelt elk, Sitka black-tailed deer, Kodiak brown bear, wild salmon, and fourteen species of marine mammal. With the first phase of the Afognak project completed, the partners are seeking funding to support a second phase of habitat conservation targeting 16,000 acres. The project was recently awarded over $900,000 from the highly competitive U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s National Coastal Wetlands grant program.
Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation
ALC’s Mississippi River Program has greatly benefited from the generosity of the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation (ICECF). Based in Chicago, ICECF is an independent, non-profit, grant-making institution that invests in clean energy development and land preservation efforts, working with communities and citizens to improve environmental quality in Illinois.
ICECF has made four separate grants enabling ALC to conserve 1,632 acres along the Mississippi River in Southern Illinois. Three of the grants funded land acquisition and habitat restoration planning on Rockwood Island, a 2,506-acre island and side-channel complex that will become part of the Middle Mississippi River National Wildlife Refuge. In the fall of 2006, a fourth grant funded ALC’s acquisition of 231 acres along the Cache and Mississippi Rivers for the Cypress Creek National Wildlife Refuge, thereby enhancing an internationally significant wetlands complex.
