Big Muddy River Boat Launch
Providing Safe and Convenient Access to the Big Muddy River
The Big Muddy River is a tributary of the Mississippi River located in Union County, Illinois in the southwest corner of the state. The Big Muddy flows through the Shawnee National Forest through native forests, towering bluffs, and other outstanding natural areas, offering panoramic views and excellent birding and hunting opportunities.
ALC conserved 26 acres at the Big Muddy Boat Launch, creating a safe, publicly accessible launch area to the Big Muddy River with convenient access from Highway 3. From the launch boaters can navigate 4 miles to the west to the Mississippi River, or 4 miles to the east into one of the most remote sections of the Shawnee National Forest.
ALC acquired the property in 2000 and conveyed to the U.S. Forest Service in 2008.
