Conserving outstanding coastal resources
As of 2011, ALC has conserved 6,185 acres of coastal habitat and purchased 2,258 acres of timber harvest rights (preventing clear-cutting) on Afognak Island, Alaska. ALC is continuing its coastal conservation efforts in the Kodiak Archipelago by partnering with Native corporations, agencies, and others on a variety of new projects totaling as much as 135,000 acres.
Current conservation efforts focus on:
- Sitkalidak Island, a 73,000-acre wildlife wonderland that includes sixteen wild salmon streams, Kodiak brown bears, other terrestrial wildlife, and rich cultural treasures dating back 7,500 years;
- North Afognak Island, which includes unparalleled coastal habitat for marine mammals, wintering sea ducks, herring, wild salmon, and many species injured by the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill; and
- Kodiak Island, where ALC is working to protect portions of the renowned Karluk River (which returns more wild salmon per mile than any other river on earth and is the site of the highest density of Kodiak brown bears ever recorded), and portions of the west coast of the island that, once protected, will be added to the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge.
