Carson Valley
Sustaining a Centennial Ranch for Future Generations
The Carson Valley is the largest and only intact riparian valley in Nevada. Intense development pressure threatens some of the oldest ranches in the West as well as some of the most important wildlife habitat in the state.
With its backdrop of high mountain peaks, the Hussman Ranch is emblematic of the American West. The 565-acre ranch south of Gardnerville has been named a Centennial Ranch by the state because the same family has farmed it continuously for over 100 years.
ALC worked with the Hussman family to conserve their land through two separate conservation easements. The first easement on 256 acres is held by ALC, and was funded by a voluntary transfer of development rights program. The Bureau of Land Management purchased a second easement on 300 acres in 2006 using funds generated by the Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act. The easement enables the Hussmans to continue to own and operate their ranch while preserving its conservation values for future generations.
See ALC’s press release, Forever a Ranch, for more information.
