High Rock Canyon

Conserving Nevada's High Desert Wilderness

Working to protect Nevada’s high desert wilderness, ALC transferred 7,650 acres of privately owned land in the state’s northwest corner to the Bureau of Land Management. The acreage is part of High Rock Canyon, a wilderness study area and BLM-designated Area of Critical Environmental Concern.

The High Rock Canyon wilderness is a colorful mosaic of sage-green mesas, steep-walled red canyons and cold, blue creeks. Pools in the sculpted rock contain endemic desert fish from the days of ancient Lake Lahontan. The wilderness supports a nesting population of golden eagles, prairie falcons, hawks and owls. The canyons, buttes and uplands are home to mule deer and pronghorn antelope. Bighorn sheep, extinct in this area for more than 50 years, were reintroduced in 1996.
