Mount Rose
Protecting Archeological Sites from Development
Land near Mount Rose, a prominent 8,911-foot peak in the heart of the Carson Range, was at the center of a community struggle over potential development of a ski and gambling resort. Some 68 parcels of privately owned land had been subdivided as home sites, complicating management of the area. Many archeological sites in the area potentially qualified for protection under the National Historic Preservation Act.
At the request of the U.S. Forest Service, ALC stepped in to inventory the sites. We then structured an exchange to bring the historically significant areas under federal protection and acquired other private lands for public recreation and open space. To learn more about Mount Rose Wilderness area, visit the U.S. Forest Service.
