Pyramid Lake
Protecting a Remnant of Lake Lahontan
Pyramid Lake is a remnant of the ancient Lake Lahontan, which once covered some 8,000 square miles of Nevada’s Great Basin. For decades the Northern Paiutes living along the northwestern shore of Pyramid Lake fought to keep water levels high enough to support native fish populations. In addition to endangered Lahontan cutthroat trout, the lake is populated by cui-ui (pronounced ‘kwee-wee’), a fish tied to the Paiutes’ cultural and spiritual identity.
