Conserving a Backcountry Treasure

Adjacent to Hope Valley near Lake Tahoe, Red Lake is a popular backcountry destination for hiking, skiing and fly-fishing. Since the late 1800s, Red Lake has stored irrigation water for farmers in Nevada’s Carson Valley, 20 miles east. Speculators acquired water rights in 1989 in hopes of selling water to fast-growing Reno and Carson City.

American Land Conservancy worked with the water owners and the state to bring land and water rights into public ownership. ALC’s efforts ensure that this alpine lake and the public lands that surround it will serve visitors to the mountains and family farms for generations to come.
