Thunderbird Lodge
Preserving a Historic Lodge in Lake Tahoe
On the National Register of Historic Places, Thunderbird Lodge, nestled between pine forests and granite boulders on the eastern shore of Lake Tahoe, was the largest privately owned lakefront property in the Tahoe Basin. Heavily forested with pine and fir, the property includes a mile of lakefront and several sandy beaches. It has one of the few osprey nesting sites in the state. Marlette Creek, which runs through the property, has been chosen for reintroduction of the threatened Lahontan cutthroat trout.
American Land Conservancy negotiated with the owner, the Del Webb Corporation, to acquire the unique Tudor Revival summer estate and its surrounding 140 acres for the public. The lodge currently is managed by the Thunderbird Lodge Preservation Society, which is dedicated to the environmental, cultural, educational and historical values of Lake Tahoe.
The Thunderbird Lodge Preservation Society provides public access to the historic site including docent-led tours.
