Pit River Canyon

Protecting a River Canyon for Rare Raptors

The Pit River is the largest river in northeastern California. ALC purchased a 358-acre property in the Pit River Canyon to add to the Modoc National Forest. The land is within a dramatic 10-mile river canyon popular with kayakers, anglers, hikers, campers and mountain bikers.

This unique landscape contains volcanic plateaus covered with grasslands and forests of ponderosa and Jeffrey pine, juniper, Oregon white oak and mountain mahogany. The canyon hosts an unusually high number of birds of prey, including golden and bald eagles, kestrels, endangered Swainson's hawks, and red-tailed hawks. Peregrine and prairie falcons nest in the cliffs over the river.
