Beaver Island
Protecting the Pallid Sturgeon
The island and side-channel complexes of the middle Mississippi River are the region’s best breeding habitat for the threatened and endangered pallid sturgeon, a big river fish dating back to the time of the dinosaurs. Working in partnership with Ducks Unlimited and the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation ALC consolidated 18 separately owned parcels on Beaver Island, a rare and known breeding ground for the pallid sturgeon. The island’s forested areas support migrating songbirds, while waterfowl and shorebirds feed along the wetlands and sandbars adjacent to the island. ALC has donated the property to the Middle Mississippi River National Wildlife Refuge.
