Devil’s Island

Providing Wildlife Recreation to the Public

Island and side-channel complexes provide an important niche for wildlife along the Middle Mississippi River. The only backwater side-channel on the Illinois side of the river that flows year-round, the Devil's Island complex provides opportunities to restore rare habitats.

ALC obtained the Devil’s Island complex in 2003 with funding from the Illinois Open Lands Trust Fund. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources now owns and manages the area, providing public recreation and education through wildlife viewing, hiking, hunting, fishing, boating, picnicking and camping.

For hunting information and a map of the Devil’s Island Wildlife Management Area, visit the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
