Sea West Ranch
Saving a Rare Coastal Prairie on the Harmony Coast
The Harmony Coast runs 15 miles along an undeveloped stretch of Central California between the seaside towns of Cayucos and Cambria. Here the 746-acre Sea West Ranch, one of the largest remaining coastal prairie grasslands in the state, faced possible subdivision development.
After years of work, ALC was able to buy the property, securing three miles of coastline for the California Coastal Trail and critical habitat for bald and golden eagles, California red-legged frogs, seals and sea lions.
The property now is owned and managed by the California State Parks, in cooperation with the Coastal Conservancy and the Department of Fish and Game. As of November 2008, Harmony Headlands State Park is now open to the public for day use and hiking and lies in San Luis Obispo County, between the towns of Cayucos and Harmony.
