John Muir's Gravesite

Securing a Resting Place for the Father of Conservation

Visitors from around the world visit the John Muir National Historic Site established in 1964 in Martinez, California, to pay their respects to one of history's greatest conservationists. While the Muir family home was open to visitors, the small cemetery where John Muir and his wife, Louisa Strentzel Muir, are buried had been closed to the public.

ALC acquired the cemetery in 1996 and helped bring the site under the protection of the National Park Service in 1999. ALC installed a wrought-iron fence to replace the unsightly chain link that had enclosed the Muir gravesite.

ALC is honored to have played a role in bringing this national treasure into public ownership.
