Creating a Coastal Legacy in California

The Wild Cherry Canyon property consists of approximately 2,400 acres located on the Pacific Ocean along California’s central coast. Recognized as one of California’s outstanding conservation areas, it lies within San Luis Obispo County northwest of the town of Avila Beach and within the region known as the “Irish Hills.”

ALC is working to protect 2,400-acre Wild Cherry Canyon and convey the property to the state for inclusion in the California State Park system. Together with other nearby and adjacent properties, including the Hibberd Preserve owned by the Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo County, the conservation of Wild Cherry Canyon will add 5,500 acres to Montaña de Oro State Park, expanding it by 65% and making it one of the largest parks on the state. This project will also enable a 15-20 mile extension of the California Coastal Trail. The project is part of ALC's West Coast Trail program.

This rare, undeveloped coastal property features sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean across San Luis Bay and beyond. Its diverse habitat consists of coastal bluffs, terraces, and inland areas supporting coastal scrub, coast live oak woodlands, wildflower fields, and maritime chaparral. Its rich riparian resources support numerous special status species, neotropical migratory songbird habitat, and the threatened California red-legged frog.
With easy accessibility and proximity to major highways, the property will also serve the growing number of Californians seeking to experience the beauty and open space of the Central Coast.
ALC has launched a campaign to raise the necessary funds from a variety of public and private sources, including concerned individuals like you.
Together, we have an opportunity to preserve one of California’s unique landscapes for future generations to use and enjoy.
